Hermès Bag Repair Sydney | Birkin, Kelly & Small Goods

Hermès Repair in Sydney: The Care These Pieces Deserve
No pieces arrive at our atelier with more ceremony than Hermès, and none reward careful restoration more. Birkins, Kellys, Constances, Evelynes, Bearn wallets and Hermès belts pass across our bench weekly, sent by clients who want maison-level care without the maison's waitlist, and by owners who've discovered that Hermès' own spa has rules that don't fit every bag.

The Hermès spa question, answered honestly
Hermès operates its own refurbishment service through boutiques, and for eligible bags it's excellent. Three realities to plan around: it can take months, as bags typically travel to Hermès craftsmen; it accepts only work Hermès itself deems appropriate; and, the part every owner should know before choosing any repairer, Hermès generally declines to service a bag that a third party has worked on.
We tell every Hermès client this at assessment, because it changes the decision. Our guidance:
- Cosmetic care (professional cleaning, conditioning, hardware polishing) keeps your options open.
- Structural or colour work (restitching, corner rebuilds, recolouring, replating) is a genuine fork in the road: done well it restores the bag beautifully, but the maison's spa may no longer take it afterwards.
- For rare or collector pieces, we'll sometimes advise the boutique route, or leaving well alone, over our own bench. Protecting the bag's value comes before winning the job.
If you plan to keep a piece in maison servicing for life, we will talk that through honestly first. No other repairer needs to have this conversation with you. We think it's the only honest way to work on Hermès. Read our take on restoration and resale value.

What Hermès owners bring us
Cleaning and spa treatments from $75, with full interior-and-exterior spa from $120: Togo, Clemence, Epsom and Box each cleaned to their own rules, and exotic pieces (crocodile, lizard, ostrich) handled with material-specific care.
Corners, handles and edges. Corner wear stabilised and recoloured from $80; handle darkening and edge wear restored so the patina you love stays and the damage goes.
Colour work. Touch-ups from $80 and surface colour revival from $199, always tested and matched to Hermès' exacting shades; our étoupe Bearn restoration is a client favourite.
Small goods and belts. Bearn wallets restitched and re-edged from $40; reversible belts repaired and buckles polished from $120.
Hardware. Palladium and gold-plated hardware polished from $120, replated from $125, engravings and stampings preserved.
Loose stitching, caught early, is the cheapest Hermès repair there is: saddle-stitched seams are eminently restorable when addressed before they run.
A minimum booking applies to all work; we'll confirm everything in your quote.

Birkins and Kellys: the work we do most
These two carry the most value and the most sentiment, so it is worth spelling out what actually happens on the bench.
Cleaning and spa. A Birkin or Kelly spa is not a wipe-down. The leather is cleaned to its type, the interior refreshed, hardware brightened and the leather conditioned so it feeds without darkening. Togo and Clemence, being forgiving grained leathers, respond beautifully; Epsom holds its structure but shows corner rub more sharply, so we work its edges with extra care; Box calf is the most delicate of all and is treated conservatively, because its mirror finish records everything.
Faded and dulled colour. Sun and handling slowly flatten Hermès colour, often unevenly, with one panel paler than the rest. Faded panels are revived and blended back to the original shade, always tested on a hidden area first, from the touch-up and colour revival pricing above. Gold, étoupe, noir and the brighter oranges and rouges each behave differently under restoration, and we match to the bag in front of us, not to a chart.
Handles. Handle darkening is the most common Birkin complaint we see: years of hand contact leave the top handle shades deeper than the body. Handles are cleaned, colour-corrected and resealed so they match the bag again, keeping the character of honest wear without the grime.
Corners and structure. Corner wear is stabilised and recoloured from $80 before it becomes exposed leather, and softened or slumping structure is assessed from photos with an honest read on what can be brought back.

Before you sell, after you buy
A spa before sale is one of the best returns in resale: clean leather, bright hardware and a fresh interior photograph better, support your asking price and read to buyers as a bag that has been cared for. If you have just bought a second-hand Birkin or Kelly, a spa is an equally sensible first step. It removes the previous owner's wear and gives us the chance to flag anything worth addressing early, from softening corners to the beginnings of fading. One clear line: we restore, we do not authenticate, so have authentication done before purchase rather than after.
Discretion, documentation, insurance
Hermès clients get the same process as everyone (photographed on arrival, work confirmed before starting, insured handling throughout), with the discretion these pieces warrant. Transit insurance covers up to $20,000 per shipment for interstate clients.

FAQ
Do you work on Birkins and Kellys?
Yes, weekly: Birkins, Kellys, Constances, Evelynes, Bearn wallets and Hermès belts all pass across our bench. The work runs from spa cleaning (from $75, full interior-and-exterior spa from $120) through corner, handle, edge and colour restoration, hardware polishing from $120 and replating from $125, with Togo, Clemence, Epsom and Box each cleaned to their own rules and exotics handled with material-specific care. Every piece is photographed on arrival, the work confirmed with you before starting, and handled insured throughout, with the discretion these pieces warrant. Before anything structural, we also talk you through the Hermès spa question honestly, because it can affect the maison's future service of your bag. Start with photos for a discreet assessment.
Where in Sydney is best for Hermès bag repair?
The Reco Lab's Sydney CBD atelier specialises in Hermès restoration, with Birkins, Kellys, Constances and Bearn wallets on the bench weekly and more than eight years of luxury restoration experience. Work is discreet and insured, with Australia-wide mail-in for clients outside Sydney, and every job is quoted from photos before anything is booked.
Does Hermès repair bags in Australia?
Hermès offers refurbishment through its boutiques for eligible bags, and for those bags it's excellent. Three realities to plan around: it can take months, as bags typically travel to Hermès craftsmen; it accepts only work Hermès itself deems appropriate; and Hermès generally declines to service a bag that a third party has worked on. For out-of-scope repairs, vintage pieces and faster local turnarounds, a specialist atelier is the alternative, and for rare or collector pieces we'll sometimes advise the boutique route, or leaving well alone, over our own bench, because protecting the bag's value comes before winning the job. Send photos and we'll give you an honest read on the right path for your piece.
Will third-party repair affect future Hermès spa service?
Honestly: it can, and we tell every Hermès client this at assessment because it changes the decision. Hermès generally declines to service a bag that a third party has worked on. Our guidance: cosmetic care (professional cleaning, conditioning, hardware polishing) keeps your options open, while structural or colour work such as restitching, corner rebuilds, recolouring or replating is a genuine fork in the road: done well it restores the bag beautifully, but the maison's spa may no longer take it afterwards. For rare or collector pieces we'll sometimes advise the boutique route, or leaving well alone, over our own bench. No other repairer needs to have this conversation with you; we think it's the only honest way to work on Hermès.
Can Togo and Epsom leather be repaired?
Yes, and each to its own rules. Togo and Clemence are forgiving grained leathers that respond well to cleaning, corner restoration and colour work. Epsom is embossed and holds its shape but shows corner rub and scratches more sharply, so repairs focus on edges and colour precision. Box calf is the most delicate and is treated conservatively. We confirm the approach for your leather before starting.
What does a Hermès bag spa include?
Cleaning and conditioning from $75, or a full interior and exterior spa from $120. The leather is cleaned to its type, the interior refreshed, hardware brightened and the leather conditioned without darkening it. Deeper work such as corner or colour restoration is quoted separately from photos.
Can a Birkin's corners and handles be restored?
Yes: corner wear is stabilised and recoloured from $80, and handle darkening and edge wear are cleaned, evened and restored so the patina you love stays and the damage goes. Colour touch-ups start from $80 and surface colour revival from $199, always tested and matched to Hermès' exacting shades. Loose stitching caught early is the cheapest Hermès repair there is (saddle-stitched seams are eminently restorable when addressed before they run), so don't wait on a corner that's opening. A minimum booking applies to all work, and everything is confirmed with you before it begins, with insured, documented handling throughout. Send photos of the corners and handles for a discreet assessment.
Can scratched Hermès hardware be polished?
Yes. Palladium and gold-plated hardware is polished from $120, and replating from $125 is the answer once plating has worn through. Stampings and engravings are preserved throughout.
Can Hermès hardware be replated?
Yes: palladium and gold-plated hardware is polished from $120 and replated from $125, with engravings and stampings preserved throughout, which matters on Hermès more than almost any other house. Worth knowing before you commit: replating sits on the structural side of the line that may affect the maison's willingness to spa the bag later, so polishing is the more conservative choice; we'll talk you through that trade-off at assessment. Like everything here, hardware work is photographed on arrival, confirmed with you before starting, and handled insured throughout. A minimum booking applies to all work. Send close-up photos of the hardware and stampings for a quote.
Should I have my Birkin spa treated before selling it?
A spa before sale is one of the best returns in resale. Clean leather, bright hardware and a fresh interior photograph better and support your asking price, and buyers read a cared-for bag as a safer purchase. Allow two to three weeks before you plan to list.
I bought a second-hand Birkin. Should it be spa treated?
It is a sensible first step. A spa removes the previous owner's wear and lets us flag anything worth addressing early, from softening corners to fading. We restore rather than authenticate, so have authentication done before purchase, not after.
Will restoration affect my Hermès resale value?
Quality restoration that preserves original character typically protects value: buyers pay for condition. The nuance is knowing where restoration helps and where it doesn't: for rare and collector pieces we discuss the best path first, including when the answer is "don't restore" or "take the boutique route", because protecting the bag's value comes before winning the job. Worth folding into the decision: Hermès generally declines to service a bag a third party has worked on, so cosmetic care keeps your options open while structural or colour work is a considered choice. Every piece is photographed on arrival and the work confirmed before starting. Send photos and we'll give you an honest read for your particular bag.
