Professional Risk Acknowledgment

Material Considerations in Luxury Restoration

At The Reco Lab, restoration is approached with precision, restraint, and respect for original craftsmanship.

Luxury items are constructed from delicate, often complex materials. While our techniques are controlled and specialist-led, certain material behaviours are inherent and cannot be entirely prevented.

The following acknowledgments apply only where relevant to the item being serviced.

1. Suede & Nubuck

Suede and nubuck are soft, open-fibre materials that naturally respond to handling and moisture.

During professional cleaning:

  • The nap may soften or sit flatter.
  • The material may feel slightly drier.
  • Minor tonal variation may occur.

These responses are characteristic of suede and are considered a natural evolution of the material following treatment.

2. Leather & Fabric Combinations

Items combining dyed leather with fabric or textile components require careful moisture control during cleaning.

While uncommon, there is a possibility of:

  • Subtle colour migration from leather into adjacent fabric
  • Transfer from inner leather linings to surrounding materials

This is influenced by the original dye process and construction of the item. All preventative measures are taken; however, complete elimination of this risk is not always possible.

3. Patent Leather

Patent colour change:

Patent leather is finished with a sealed, high-gloss topcoat applied under factory conditions.

Recolouring is generally most stable when transitioning to darker tones, particularly black.

The final outcome depends on:

  • The condition of the original topcoat
  • The surface’s ability to accept pigment
  • The number of layers required for refinement

Patent repairs/ build up/ touch up:

Due to this specialised coating - the original high-shine surface cannot be fully recreated once compromised.

  • Any refinishing may result in slight variation in gloss level.
  • Texture differences may remain under close inspection.
  • We will restore to our best ability, however it is not possible to achieve the original texture/ aesthetic.

The original topcoat cannot be precisely replicated

4. Louis Vuitton Vachetta, Aniline, Natural & Untreated Leathers

Aniline and untreated leathers are highly absorbent and designed to age gracefully.

Following cleaning and conditioning:

  • A slight deepening of tone is expected
  • The leather may appear richer or warmer
  • Vachetta leather especially can become slightly dried if watermarks/ deeper stains require removal.

This tonal evolution is permanent and forms part of the natural character of the material.

Where uniformity across the surface is desired, full recolouring may be recommended.

5. Localised Spot Treatment (Fabric & Porous Materials)

Isolated spot cleaning on fabric or absorbent materials may result in:

  • Slight haloing
  • Subtle watermarking
  • Variation once dried

For visual consistency, panel-wide treatment is often advised over isolated correction.

6. Mirror & High-Gloss Metallic Finishes

Mirror metallic finishes are achieved through specialised industrial coatings.

While restoration can improve appearance:

  • True mirror reflectivity cannot be reproduced
  • A softened metallic finish may result instead

7. Metallic Colour Matching

Gold, silver, and specialty metallic tones are proprietary factory formulations.

Colour matching is performed to the closest achievable finish using professional-grade pigments. Minor variation in undertone or reflectivity may occur.

9. Replacement/ Hardware Components

Authentic components are used where available through authorised channels.

Where original parts are unavailable, a premium alternative may be proposed following assessment and client approval.

Acknowledgment

By proceeding with service, you acknowledge the inherent material characteristics outlined above and understand that restoration is a refined technical process — not re-manufacture.
