Belts are the hardest-working leather goods most people own - flexed, buckled and rubbed daily — yet they’re the item owners are least sure can be repaired. They absolutely can. From Hermès and Gucci to Louis Vuitton and Ferragamo, belt restoration is a steady part of our bench.

Resizing done properly

Weight changes, gifts and secondhand finds all create the same need: a belt that’s the wrong length. Proper resizing depends on construction; many designer belts adjust at the buckle end, keeping the hole spacing and tip untouched, while others are shortened and re-holed with clean, correctly spaced punches that match the originals. What we won’t do is punch a rough extra hole that announces itself; done right, a resized belt looks born at its new length.

Leather and edge restoration

Belts crack along their flex lines, wear their edge coating, stretch at the buckle fold and scuff at the tip. Restoration covers conditioning and colour revival, edge re-coating, reinforcement at the fold, and full colour refinishing on faded or scratched straps; much of it the same craft as our cracked leather work.

Buckles and hardware

Scratched, tarnished or worn-through buckle plating is restored exactly as documented in our Louis Vuitton buckle 24k gold replating case study. Polishing for intact plating, replating where it’s worn through, engravings preserved throughout.

Cases in point: Hermès and Fendi belts restored

A reversible Hermès in gold and black, brought back on both fronts. A reversible Hermès belt arrived with the black side discoloured from wear and the gold buckle scuffed and dulled. Reversible belts work twice as hard, since every wear puts one face against fabric and the world. Our artisans restored the black leather to a deep, even finish and refinished the gold plating on the buckle, returning the scuffed hardware to the clean shine the H deserves. The belt went home ready to be worn either way again.

A pink Fendi belt, recoloured to its original shade. A pink Fendi belt came in with its colour worn through along the strap, the pale base leather showing wherever hands and buckling had done their work. We restored the leather and rebuilt the colour across the strap in the original pink, sealed for daily wear. Coloured belts show their age faster than black ones, and they respond just as beautifully to restoration.

FAQ

Can a belt be made longer? Rarely, leather can’t be stretched meaningfully without harm. Shortening and buckle-end adjustment are the reliable directions.

Can you resize a belt without visible new holes? Where construction allows buckle-end adjustment, yes. Otherwise new holes are punched to factory spacing and finish, indistinguishable from originals.

Is a scratched buckle worth replating? On designer belts, usually - the buckle is the belt’s jewellery, and replating transforms the whole piece.
