Edge Paint Peeling: Why Bag Edges Fail and How Re-Edging Fixes Them

Run a finger along your bag’s handles, strap edges or flap rim — that smooth painted line is edge coat, and it’s a wear part. When it cracks, peels, lifts in ribbons or turns tacky, the bag instantly looks tired even if every panel is perfect. Re-edging is the dedicated fix, and one of our most frequent jobs.

Why edge paint fails

Edge coat is a flexible finish applied over the cut edges of leather layers. Constant flexing (handles), hand oils and heat break it down over years — which is also the root of the sticky handle phenomenon we’ve written about, and the notorious Goyard handle issue. Once cracked, edges wick moisture into the leather layers beneath, so early repair genuinely protects the bag, not just its looks.

How professional re-edging works

The failing coat is carefully stripped back to sound material, edges are smoothed and sealed, and new edge coat is applied in multiple thin layers, colour-matched and finished to the original sheen. Done properly, re-edged handles look and feel factory — and last years. Done badly (thick, wrong gloss, over the old coat), it fails fast, which is why this is atelier work rather than a craft-glue job.

FAQ

Can I just glue peeling edge paint down? Please don’t - glue contaminates the edge and has to be removed before proper re-edging, adding cost.

Will the colour match my bag? Yes, edge coat is colour-matched and sheen-matched to the original, including contrast edges (a signature on many houses).

Is sticky edge paint the same problem as peeling? Same root cause at a different stage - degraded coating. Both are resolved by stripping and re-edging.
