The five rules

Stuff the bag. Loosely fill with acid-free tissue or a shaped pillow so panels can’t collapse and crease. Never newspaper (ink transfers) and never overstuff.

Chains and hardware inside, wrapped. Chain straps left against a flap will imprint or scratch it. Tuck them inside, wrapped in tissue or felt.

Breathable cover, never plastic. The original dust bag is ideal. Sealed plastic tubs trap humidity, a direct route to the mould problems we treat every Sydney summer.

Upright, supported, out of sunlight. Bags stored on their side crease; bags hung by handles stretch them. Sunlight through a window fades colour in months.

Air and rotate. Open the wardrobe, air the bags, and rotate what you carry. Leather that’s used occasionally and conditioned ages better than leather entombed for years. More in our leather maintenance guide.

Australian humidity, specifically

Coastal Australian humidity is the #1 storage enemy we see. In humid months, silica gel sachets in the wardrobe (not inside the bag touching leather), space between stored bags, and an occasional airing make the difference. If you’re storing long-term (a wedding piece, an heirloom) have it professionally cleaned first so nothing sets or feeds mould while it waits.

If storage damage has already happened

Warped panels can be professionally reshaped, mould treated, and dust-bag colour transfer corrected. None of it means the bag is lost.

Should I store bags in their boxes? Boxes are fine if the bag is stuffed, in its dust bag, and the box isn’t airtight or in a humid spot. Air it seasonally.

Are silica gel packets safe with leather? Yes, in the wardrobe or box. Just not resting directly against leather for long periods.

How often should stored bags be checked? Every one to two months in humid seasons. Early mould is a quick fix; a year of it isn’t.
