Bottega Veneta’s Intrecciato weave is instantly recognisable and technically unlike anything else in luxury - hundreds of leather strands woven by hand into a moving, flexible surface. It’s also uniquely tricky to repair: damage one strand and the fix must disappear into a living lattice. This is specialist work we’re honest about, strand by strand.

How Intrecciato wears

The weave flexes constantly, so wear concentrates where strands cross and rub: handles, top edges, base corners. Individual strands can dry, crack, lift at their ends or wear their colour at the crossings - soft nappa versions (Jodie, Cassette) mark and scuff faster than sturdier calf weaves.

What’s repairable

Colour and finish wear across the weave restores very well - colour is rebuilt over the strands and worked into the crossings so coverage stays even in movement. Lifted or loose strand ends can be re-secured and finished. Damaged individual strands can in many cases be repaired in place or replaced and re-woven through the surrounding lattice - the most delicate tier of the work, quoted only after in-person assessment. Cleaning and conditioning matters more on Intrecciato than most bags: the weave’s gaps collect dust and dry unevenly, and professional conditioning keeps strands supple so they don’t crack at the crossings.

Case in point: a black Bottega Veneta with split woven handles

A black Bottega Veneta bag arrived at our Sydney atelier with the Intrecciato weave on both handles splitting, the classic failure point where the strands carry the bag's full weight and flex with every carry. Split handle strands worsen quickly once they start, because each broken crossing shifts more load onto its neighbours.

Our artisans reinforced the weave from within, strengthening the handles beneath and through the lattice so the strands are supported without disturbing the woven pattern. The handles were then refinished in the original black, and the completed repair disappears into the weave. The bag returned to service with handles stronger than the day it arrived, and the signature Intrecciato intact.

Honest limits

A large torn-through section of weave cannot be invisibly rebuilt - replacement panels are sometimes possible, sometimes not, depending on construction. Handles with widespread strand failure may be better replaced than rewoven. We’ll always tell you which side of the line your bag sits on.
