Chanel Caviar vs Lambskin, Care & Restoration Differences

Chanel Caviar vs Lambskin: How Each Leather Wears, and What’s Restorable
Ask any Chanel owner and they’ll have a side: the pebbled durability of caviar or the buttery glow of lambskin. As the atelier behind our full Chanel bag repair guide and several published Chanel restorations, we see how both leathers age over decades, and what each needs to stay beautiful.

How caviar wears
Caviar’s pebbled, treated calfskin resists scratches and rain admirably, which is why it’s the daily-wear favourite. Its weak points are corner wear, where the raised grain rubs white over time, colour dulling across high-touch panels, and dye transfer on light colours. All three restore extremely well: corners can be colour-rebuilt and the grain refinished so evenly it’s hard to find the repair.

How lambskin wears
Lambskin’s smooth, almost powdery surface is what makes it luxurious, and vulnerable. Fingernail marks, dents, scratches and pressure imprints appear easily, and its soft finish rubs at corners and under the chain. The good news: light scratching and surface marks in lambskin respond beautifully to professional smoothing and refinishing, and colour revival returns the characteristic glow. Deep gouges through the skin can be dramatically improved rather than erased. We’re always upfront about which yours is.

Care that actually matters
Rotate rather than daily-drive lambskin, keep both leathers away from denim in light colours, condition sparingly with leather-appropriate products only, and store flaps properly. Stuffed, upright, chain inside protected, never hanging.

FAQ
Do scratches come out of lambskin? Light surface scratches and marks usually smooth and refinish very well. Deep gouges improve dramatically but may remain faintly visible.
Why are my caviar corners turning white? The raised grain wears its colour at friction points. Corner colour rebuilding is a routine, highly effective restoration.
Is lambskin a mistake for a first Chanel? Not at all, it just suits rotation rather than daily wear, and most lambskin wear is restorable.
