Every autumn the boots come out of storage and every autumn our intake fills with the same discoveries: heels worn to the nail, toes scuffed grey, suede flattened by last winter’s rain, shafts slouched from months folded in a cupboard. Boots take more punishment per wear than any other luxury footwear, and they reward maintenance more too.

Heels and soles

Boot heels wear fast and unevenly - walking pattern grinds one edge first. Services we carry out include: Heel tip and cap replacement, full heel rebuilds and for where soles have worn thin, protective half soles or full sole replacement restore the foundation. Leather, suede and toes

Scuffed toes and heel counters are colour-restored; salt and water marks are treated (see our water damage guide - the chemistry is the same); and suede boots get specialist cleaning, nap revival and protective treatment that makes wet-weather wear far less nerve-racking.

Shafts and structure

Tall boots stored folded develop creases and slouch that age them instantly. Shaft reshaping restores the standing line, and boot storage is simple: shaft shapers (or rolled towels), upright, ventilated - the footwear cousin of our bag storage rules.

Case in point: suede boots back from the brink

A pair of suede boots arrived in about the worst condition footwear can reach while still being saveable: heavily soiled across the suede, and soles worn right through, with large holes underfoot. Boots like these are usually a much-loved pair worn one season too many, and the owner's question is always the same: too far gone?

Not this pair. Our artisans deep-cleaned the suede with a specialist suede shampoo, lifting the ingrained dirt and reviving the nap to an even, velvety finish. The worn-through soles were fully replaced, and new heel guards fitted to protect the rebuilt foundation from the same fate. The boots left the atelier cleaned, resoled and guarded, ready for winters to come rather than retired after one.

Case in point: black R.M. Williams, rebuilt and recoloured

A pair of black R.M. Williams boots came in heavily scuffed, with the uppers worn well past what polish could hide. Scuffing this deep removes leather, not just colour, so the repair has two stages: our artisans first built the leather back up across the damaged areas, filling and smoothing the scuffs, then recoloured the uppers in black and sealed the finish for daily wear. Boots built like R.M.s reward this kind of work; the construction outlives the surface many times over, and a rebuilt upper puts them back on the road for years.
