The Reco Journal
The Reco Journal is dedicated to education, transparency, and informed luxury care.
Here, we share insights from inside the restoration process — what works, what doesn’t, and what truly preserves value.
From first assessment to final finish, every piece that passes through our Sydney atelier teaches us something — and this is where we share it.

Removing Odours from Handbags
Some damage you can see; this one greets you every time the bag opens. Musty storage smell, decades of perfume, cigarette smoke in a vintage find, a forgotten gym top, the hand-sanitiser era - odours settle into bags and outstay their welcome. Here’s what actually gets them out.

How to Prevent Dye Transfer on Designer Bags
We’ve published several case studies on removing dye transfer, the blue-grey shadow that dark denim leaves on light handbags, including our caviar Chanel removal and white Dior Saddle restoration. This guide is the other half of the story: not getting it in the first place. Of all the damage we treat, dye transfer is the most avoidable.

Sun-Faded Bag Restoration
The bag sat beautifully on the shelf near the window, right up until the day you turned it around and found the front three shades lighter than the back. UV fade is gradual, uneven and shockingly fast in the Australian sun. It is also one of the most fully reversible problems we treat.

Stitching Repair on Designer Bags
A loose thread on a designer bag triggers a very specific dread — pull it and a seam unravels; ignore it and the gap grows. Stitching failures are among the most urgent-feeling repairs we receive, and among the most cleanly fixable when handled early and properly.

Bag Strap Repair & Replacement
Straps carry the entire weight of a bag and everything in it, all day - so it’s no surprise they fail before almost anything else. Fraying at attachment points, stretching, cracked edges, snapped shoulder straps: all repairable, and where a strap is beyond saving, we craft replacements to the original design.

Edge Paint Peeling & Re-Edging
Run a finger along your bag’s handles, strap edges or flap rim — that smooth painted line is edge coat, and it’s a wear part. When it cracks, peels, lifts in ribbons or turns tacky, the bag instantly looks tired even if every panel is perfect. Re-edging is the dedicated fix, and one of our most frequent jobs.

Bag Corner Wear Repair
Look at any well-used handbag and the story is in the corners. They touch every surface the bag is set down on, rub against everything it’s carried past — and they’re the first place colour wears through to pale base leather. The upside: corner restoration is among the highest-impact, lowest-cost repairs in our atelier.

Scratched Leather Bag Repair
A zip dragged across a flap, a fingernail on lambskin, a determined cat - scratches are the most universal damage in leather goods, and the most misunderstood. Whether a scratch “comes out” depends on how deep it goes, and knowing the difference saves both worry and DIY disasters.

Goyard Bag Repair & Cleaning Sydney
Goyard owners are devoted — and Goyard bags have a very specific set of quirks. We repair more Goyard than almost any other house relative to its rarity, and we’ve published three detailed case studies on the brand’s most notorious issue. This guide brings the whole picture together.

Prada Bag Repair Sydney
Prada built its reputation on two very different materials - crisp cross-hatched Saffiano leather and industrial nylon.. and each fails in its own way. Our atelier handles both, along with the soft calf, brushed leather and vintage pieces that round out the Prada universe.

Gucci Bag Repair Sydney
From vintage Jackie hobos to quilted Marmonts and GG Supreme totes, Gucci pieces span such different materials and eras that no two arrive with the same problems. That variety is exactly what a restoration atelier is for — assessing each construction on its own terms.

Chanel Bag Repair Sydney
Few houses inspire the loyalty Chanel does and few bags are held onto longer. Classic Flaps are handed between generations, which means the bags that reach our Sydney atelier carry decades of wear alongside their sentimental weight. Chanel restoration is a core specialty at The Reco Lab, documented across multiple published case studies.
